How Deep Do Foundation Footings Need to Be in Northeast Ohio?

Ohio deliberately leaves the number to your local building department. Here's why, and what it means for your budget.

There is no single statewide Ohio frost depth. Ohio's residential code sets an absolute minimum and then explicitly hands the frost line number to each local jurisdiction. So the correct answer for your project is whatever your building department requires, and it can differ across a county line.

What the code actually does

The Residential Code of Ohio sets a floor that applies everywhere, then requires footings to be protected from frost by extending below the frost line. But the frost line number itself is not set statewide. The code's design criteria table has a column that each jurisdiction fills in with the minimum footing depth below finish grade for its own area.

Why builders and websites get this wrong

Because there's no statewide number, a lot of content simply invents one. If you see a single "Ohio frost depth" quoted anywhere, treat it with suspicion. The correct answer for your project is whatever your building department requires, and it can differ across a county line.

Why the depth matters

Water in soil expands when it freezes. If a footing sits above the frost line, that expansion can lift it, a process called frost heave, and the movement cracks foundations, sticks doors and windows and creates structural problems. Placing footings below the depth to which soil reliably freezes removes the mechanism.

What it means for your budget

Deeper footings mean more excavation and more concrete than a build in a warmer climate. That cost is unavoidable, and it's part of why full basements are standard here: once you're excavating to that depth anyway, the marginal cost of a basement is far lower than it would be in a slab market. What to do about it
